Helping the Chevra
The Chevra is run by a small committee of dedicated volunteers. This group works very hard to provide the services required by our members. However, there is much to do and help from our members is a mitzvah which is greatly welcomed and much valued.
We have found that people often have a desire to assist in a specific area on an occasional basis and we accommodate this by the following helper groups.
If you want to help, please let us know and we will add your name to the appropriate group. Remember, the more people who put their names forward, the less we will need to call on you.
There are occasions at funerals and services where the family can’t be sure a Minyan of 10 Jewish men will be present. At such times, we quietly call on our Minyan Helpers and ask if there are a few extras who can attend. This generally suits older or retired people or those with a little flexibility in their daily lives. It doesn’t happen often but when it does, attendance is much appreciated otherwise Kaddish cannot be said for the deceased. To be added to the Minyan Helpers, please contact us.
An important part of our activities are to visit the older members of the community or those who are unwell. If you are able to help here, please contact our relief officer Valerie Levy.

On occasions we conduct short working parties at the cemetery (typically a Sunday morning or afternoon) to keep our facilities at Waikumete in good order. If you have some time available, we would be extremely grateful. Examples of these activities include application of “Wet and Forget” on the headstones, tidying up Beit Olam (the prayer house), burying books etc. If you can help, please contact Michael Silverman.
